Tom Reichert

As in years past, several commercials airing during Super Bowl XL contained instances of sex in advertising. Sexual content ranged from the very conspicuous such as the strap-popping GoDaddy.com spot to the somewhat subtle “girl-next-door” in Michelob Ultra’s “Touch Football” spot. And depending on your definition of sexual content, qualifiers also could include Budweiser’s streaking lamb and Hummer’s romantic pairing of a technobot and Godzilla’s cousin.

In advertising, sexual content is that which evokes sexual thoughts and feelings. Physically attractive models in revealing attire are most common, but displays of sexual behavior also elicit a sexual response. This was evident in Ameriquest’s “Turbulence” spot where passengers mistakenly assume a female passenger, who accidentally landed astride a snoozing man while exiting her seat, was involved in more than small talk. Other spots notable for their use of sex include Cadillac’s “Chrome Couture” spot, Honda Ridgeline’s mudflap-girl-come-to-life spot, and Pizza Hut’s “Start Poppin’” spot featuring Jessica Simpson.
